Volumes

When I first encountered my spot at the Lachine Canal, I fell in love with it and its essence, but I realized not many people seemed to care about it. I told my self: I want people to sit down and appreciate it.

“ATL - Canal Lachine”, the first step of this project, intended to create an intimate space on an open area of the Canal. I situated a blue chair for strangers to sit down and I left a notebook for them to write down their thoughts, their feelings and their perceptions about the view they were admiring. My intention was to see that specific spot of the canal through their eyes .

In this new step of “ATL”, I built a box and inside of it, I recreated “ATL - Canal Lachine”.

I decided to change the size of it to keep the feeling of intimacy. I felt it was important to capture that moment and freeze it in time, just like a picture does. The installation is covered with the texts and drawings from the people that experienced my previous project. Once again, I have decided to situate this floating piece on a public space and invite the people to look through a small window in order to discover a tiny hidden part of Montreal. I want to share with others the nostalgia, the aesthetics (ugliness and beauty), the solitude, the banality and the simplicity that I encountered the first time I experienced the Lachine Canal.
